Welcome to the Brussels Yaegaki-Kai

The Brussels Yaegaki Kai is an Iaido (居合道) dojo located in Brussels (Uccle) Belgium. We hope that this website will promote the development of Iaido. A Japanese martial art coming directly from the samurai-time.

The Brussels Yaegaki Kai - Iaido Club Ucclois is an affiliate of the All Belgium Kendo Federation (ABKF), which itself is part of the International Kendo Federation (IKF). Membership in the Brussels Yaegaki Kai dojo is open to anyone interested in learning Iaido and all skill levels are welcome. View our training hours page.

BIC 2011

The Belgian Iaido Championship 2011 took place this Sunday 17/05/11 in Affligem with motivated competitors with very good level resulting into sometimes difficult decisions but thrilling finals from Mudan to Yondan. A grading session from ikkyu to sandan followed the finals, finishing the day with a 5th/6th/7th dan Embu and the Awards ceremony. Congratulations to all the participants and organising staff.

During the championships the Brussels Yaegaki-kai did very well with a Yondan Gold medal for Yuki, a Gold medal for Gregory in mudan, a Bronze medal for Eric in shodan and the participation of Patrick in the Nidan division. Our friends from Kendo Gent did also very well with the good results of Steven silver in mudan, Valentin gold in shodan and Stof gold in nidan division.

The guidance of referee

While intensively training, immersed in our day to day keiko slowly polishing the received teachings. It is always a good idea to dedicate some time to check your performance yourself, for example by filming and then judging your waza execution. On the way of the Jo …

Some time ago Yuki and I were initiated to Jodo, at first our goal was to have a general understanding of the discipline to better enjoy the EU. championships held in Belgium, what we did, but very soon it became clear to us that it was another great opportunity to work on the Maai. Our thursday keiko already incorporate the regular practice of the kendo no kata, but as I already explained Jodo add the freshness of a new weapon with a different balance, weight and length.

Duties of referees

Searching in my notes for another paper I found an old fax copy entitled “Manual for referee seminar” and dating of May, 2003. It is clearly dedicated to kendo but can be easily transposed to Iaido and Jodo. I post it here under without any text modifications, just adding 2 pictures.

Do nothing which is of no use

Watching one more time the Hakone taikai embu we just could not get tired detailing sensei’s kata interpretations and styles. All the sensei are rendering the kata’s riai (story) so perfectly and in such a way that even on TV you can feel/see the kasso teki.

Of course all the presented sensei are Iaido’s top of the top. They all are 8th dan Kyoshi/Hanshi with more than 35 years of experience, not only in Iaido but for most of them in various other Budō. One of them in particular catched our attention because his materialization of the kasso teki is terrific. We had the opportunity to see him “live” during one of our iaido trip and he simply left us speechless …

Kangeiko 2011

It could have been the title of an Hollywood or a Toho super-production, “Kangeiko 2011: The return of the sempai”. But it was something way better than any movie production. This year the Brussels Yaegaki-kai organized his Kangeiko in Switzerland, and trust me it was not only snow, cheese and yodel.
